“JB” Roberts passed away at McLeod Health Hospital in Cheraw, SC on January 24, 2022. JB was born in Lockhart, Texas on June 19, 1921 to Joseph Benjamin Roberts and Hettie Maude McMahan. He is preceded in death by his wife Irene Lupien Roberts, his brother Ralph Roberts, and his grandson Anthony Furina.

JB is survived by his sister Frances Melde, niece Vicky Gregson, six children, 12 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren, along with other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

During high school JB was a football star. His pictures have been posted on the walls of Black’s Barbecue, a famous restaurant in Lockhart, Texas. JB joined the Navy after high school to see the world. He was trained and graduated at the Naval Base in San Diego, California.  Before the war JB visited countries in the Caribbean like Trinidad, he also visited Brazil, Argentina, and Puerto Rico. In the Pacific area he went to Australia, Hawaii, and Tahiti.

During WWII, JB served as a helmsman and a torpedo man on submarines such as the USS Bergall, the USS Sea Robin, and the USS Stingray. After WWII JB was stationed at the Naval Base in Portsmouth, NH where he met his wife of 47 years Irene. JB and Irene moved to Texas where he worked as a ladder man at a Fire Department in San Antonio, Texas. Later JB and Irene moved to Dover, NH where JB worked as tanner at the United Tanners Company until retirement.

JB was a great conversationalist. He was always surrounded by family and friends where all enjoyed his humorous and serious stories he shared as a boy growing up in Texas, his life during the war, and raising his six children.
